Alternatives to the Renault Twizy – What small electric vehicles are there?
The Renault Twizy has polarized since its market launch in 2012 – after all, it is a very special microvehicle with two seatsand also available as a variant with 45 km/h – so it can be driven at the age of 15. The range of up to 100 kilometers is also perfect for the city, the length of just 2.30 meters anyway and the fact that you sit behind each other and not next to each other is something different and makes it even narrower.
If you are now convinced and want to buy a new Twizy right away, we have to disappoint you. Production was discontinued in September 2023, but it is certainly still available as a used car.
So what are the Renault Twizy alternatives? We have put together a few models for you.
No more parking problem: Twizy alternative
If you spend most of your time in the city and don't feel like using public transport, you can also travel in an environmentally friendly and weather-protected small electric vehicle. Especially short distances such as the way to the shops, to work or simply to the family in the next district - with a Renault Twizy alternative this is no problem.
You will definitely find a parking space and even a little cargo space is available - the shopping bag will certainly find space. In addition, there is no lack of driving fun and the looks of passers-by are also guaranteed. The last point is the price, which is of course not negligible. A light electric vehicle costs comparatively little and the charging time for the battery is also manageable.

Mobilize Duo and Bento – the Twizy successors
The Renault Twizy is no longer in production, but there is a successor. With the duo, the Renault subsidiary Mobilize has created an urban mobility solution that is definitely suitable as a Twizy alternative. With the smaller version than 45 km/h car, young people from 15 can also drive. The cargo version – which was also available of the Twizy – will also be revived in the form of the Bento.
A few facts about the models:
- only available as a subscription or long-term rental
- two versions: 45 km/h or 80 km/h
- Range up to 140 km
- Dimensions: 2.43 m long, 1.30 m wide, 1.46 m high (making the Duo 20 cm longer but 8 cm narrower than the Twizy)
Sustainability is the top priority for the Mobilize Duo, as more than 50 percent recycled materials are used. In contrast to the Twizy, the doors have two full-fledged windows integrated, the doors open upwards, so you can still park even in very narrow parking spaces. The two seats are again arranged one behind the other, upholstered and quite comfortable for this vehicle class. There is also an airbag on the steering wheel – this is by no means a matter of course for a small electric vehicle.
The Mobilize Bento cargo version has only one seat, but a 700-litre cargo compartment for everything tradesmen, courier services or other businesses need.

Microlino – Retro speedster
It doesn't get any cuter than that. The Microlino is the electric version of the BMW Isetta and makes most people's eyes light up. It combines modernity with retro design and the technology is also state-of-the-art. The catch, however, is the price. At just under 20,000 euros, the Microlino is anything but cheap.
Here are a few facts about the retro dwarf:
- Only one battery size with 10.5 kWh
- Range up to 177 km
- Dimensions: 2.52 m length, 1.47 m width, 1.50 m height
- Door is opened at the front of the body
- Maximum speed of 90 km/h
Unfortunately, there is no airbag or even ESP in the Microlino, but there is a touchscreen for infotainment. The Microlino cannot serve with air conditioning either. It's a pity, because for this price one or the other extra could have been possible.

XEV Yoyo – Chinese-Italian speedster
Who does the XEV Yoyo remind you of? Correct! To a smart. However, it is – hard to believe – even smaller. You have to like the design, a mixture of futuristic and retro – but quite special. The small vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 75 km/h and has 20 hp of power.
The facts:
- Length: 2.53 m
- Payload: a whopping 450 kg
- Range: up to 150 kilometers
- Charging time: 4 hours
The battery blocks can be removed from the trunk and theoretically completely replaced by charged ones. However, such exchange stations do not yet exist. The price starts at 13,000 euros – already significantly cheaper than the Microlino, but still not very cheap.

Estrima Biró – flying high
Dr Estrima Biró is a tall small electric vehicle with space for two people, although it is quite cramped for two. You are well protected from bad weather in Biró, but you are surrounded by plastic discs all around, which are not so ideal when the sun is shining. The e-car quickly becomes a greenhouse. You can fold up the roof and get a little wind – better than nothing.
- Side doors open to the front
- Relatively cramped with two people
- Dimensions: 1.80 m length, 1.56 m height
- Maximum 60 km/h and 100 km range
The Biró is quite long and also comparatively high – so you have to be careful not to tip over when cornering faster. Driving is really unpleasant, especially on bad roads, because the Biró does not have suspension.
City Transformer – extra schmal gemacht
For whom are small electric vehicles suitable?
Small electric vehicles are ideal for use in the city. Especially when looking for a parking space - even if you have a residents' parking permit - these vehicles can save you a lot of time. There is always a place for such a small model. In addition, a Renault Twizy alternative could also work as a small e-car for seniors, because the compact dimensions and lower price could also keep older people mobile.
But also for anyone who is on the road in a big city and does not drive on the motorway or on the country road, a small electric vehicle is an environmentally friendly and practical solution.
